My online resume / portfolio. I'm glad you dropped in!

Smarter House

This page is to serve as a reference as how I've set up my home network and all its so-called smart devices. In the future I plan to add pretty pictures, and also document some things falling outside the realm of IT like what all the different valves do for the pool, and operating the outdoor gas appliances.

SSID Overview

An SSID is essentially a wireless network name, used so you can differentiate your wifi connection from that of your neighbors. In my home these are the main SSIDs available: * Help, I'm stuck in VR! is a faster network on the 5Ghz band, for any newer devices that support it * Help, I'm stuck in 2.4Ghz! uses a slower 2.4Ghz band, mainly available for compatibility with older or cheaper devices, or when extra range is needed * Spicy Water is a hidden 2.4Ghz network for smart bulbs, TVs, whatever else (to easily pair new devices, broadcast the SSID temporarily)

High Priority Equipment

This hardware must be online and operational for Internet access. If network-wide problems occur, reboot all three in the order listed.

Device Description Image
Calix 803G GigaPoint Wall mounted Optical Network Terminal that accepts fiber connection from outside the home. Connects to the Archer C4000 via ethernet cable.
TP-Link Archer C4000 Primary router that is used for our wireless network broadcast. Connects over ethernet to the Zyxel C3510XZ, as well as the Raspberry Pi 400.
Raspberry Pi 3 A crucial part of the home network in its current configuration, this micro computer is set up as a "Pi Hole" Linux server (visit pi.hole on the network to access) which blocks advertisements and malicious or malware-infected websites. All Internet traffic is routed through here and so much like the ONT and primary router, it may sometimes need to be rebooted if connection difficulties occur.

Low Priority Equipment

If any of this hardware stops working, home functionality may be hindered, but issues with these devices should not bring down the network. Restart individually depending on the issue or situation.

Device Description Image
Zyxel C3510XZ Secondary router used for light bulbs, electrical plugs, cameras, or other vulnerability-prone devices to keep them isolated from the main network. Connected to the primary router.
Digi CPX2e ZB Solar panel gateway for monitoring solar panel activity via the Tesla app.
LiftMaster 828LM Garage door gateway for opening, closing, and monitoring status. Can be used with MyQ app but mainly used within Alarm.com app.
